About The Event

Dear Fair for All supporter,

We need your help! Please come to the next meeting of the Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension on the evening of MONDAY MARCH 25 to express your opposition to the sale of Confederate flag items at the 2019 Delaware County Fair. The meeting takes place at 7:00 pm at CCE’s Hamden office, 34570 State Highway 10. (The entrance is through the back of the building)

We are told there will be a brief period for public comments at the beginning of the meeting. We will use it to urge the Extension to stand up against the sale of this hate-promoting paraphernalia at the Delaware County Fair. As a key supporter and prominent participant in the fair, the Extension should uphold Cornell University’s mission of promoting equity and inclusion, not provide a tacit stamp of approval for racism.

Last year, Cornell President Martha Pollack called the Confederate flag a “divisive symbol of intolerance” and praised NY State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball for telling fair boards across New York State that the sale and display of these items “runs counter to our great state's long history of inclusion for all.” And yet last year the Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension voted to remain “neutral” on this issue. This is not acceptable!

Please join us if you can on March 25, and be ready to express your view by speaking on this issue, and/or bringing a sign. Your presence is really important, even if you do not want to speak. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO BRING SIGNS WITH YOUR ANTI-RACISM MESSAGES.

A Fair for All update: The campaign has expanded, and we have powerful new allies. Earlier this month we sent a registered letter to the Delaware County Fair Board asking them, once again, to stop allowing the sale and display of Confederate flag items. That open letter is attached. We have also alerted county fairs and extensions across the state that New York State’s Attorney General and our Agricultural Commissioner have now called on fairs to stop selling Confederate flags and spreading hate.

Other steps to consider:

Thank you for having the courage and integrity to stand up against racism and for a community that is welcoming to all!
